The umiak
The umiak
Another traditional craft offered by the Skin Boat School is the umiak (or angyapik). An open skin boat, it was originally used by most of the coastal peoples from the arctic for hunting large sea mammals and for transportation. Because of its length (16'-40') and wide beam (4'-8'), the umiak is the ideal vessel for group travel and exploration, or for transporting large amounts of gear and supplies.
Spirit Line umiaks are crafted with the same care and traditional techniques that go into other Spirit Line models. Hand selected wood is steam-bent, pegged and lashed, then enveloped in a highly durable translucent skin.
The umiak is a social craft in which family, friends or spirited groups can gather for shared fun and adventure. Sail, row, paddle, or power. The Umiak is a high performer at all. So dynamic, so romantic, so robust, all in a micro-lite package. In spite of its size, this traditional design produces a 24’craft that weighs approximately 150 lbs., less than one-fifth of comparably sized whaling boats constructed with modern methods and materials. Even the largest umiaks can be towed by a 4 cylinder car.
Umiak Workshops
Despite first impression, building an umiak is a fast and affordable project in a workshop. An average 25' hull will take roughly 80 hours. If constructed as a group project, this time can be halved. The project can be conducted at the Anacortes studio, or can easily be done off-site. Hollow masts, spars, sails, and rigging are designed and fabricated during the workshop.
