9 day baidarka workshop daily program

 

Listed below is our daily procedures for student reference

Day 1

  9:00-11:00   Beach lecture on the kayak: history, form and function

11:00-12.30  Students test paddle different Baidarka’s; discuss one-on-one design for each student

12:30-1:15    Lunch

1:15-  2:15    Assemble Stern

2:15-  4:45    Assemble Bow

4:45-  5:00    Clean up

Day 2

9:00-10:00     Make length and beam decisions for each kayak

10:00-11:00   Lay out gunwales

11:00-12:00   Attach bow and stern to gunwales

12:00-12:45   Lunch

12:45- 4:45    Install deck beams

4:45- 5:00      Clean up

Day 3

9:00-12:00     Finish deck beam installation

12:00- 12:45   Lunch

12:45- 2:30     Lash deck beams

2:30-3:00        Rout keels

3:00- 4:45      Sand and oil stringers, keel, and deck

4:45-5:00       Clean up

Day 4

9:00-10:00     Hang keel: set rocker and depth

11:00-12:00    Begin installing frames (ribs)

12:00-12:45    Lunch

12:45-4:45      Install and lash all frames (ribs) on all kayaks

4:45-5:00       Clean up

Day 5

9:00-12:00     Finish lashing frames (ribs) lash keel

12:00-12:45    Lunch

12:45-3:30      Fair stringers, install bow cheeks

3:30- 4:45      Oil frame

4:45-5:00       Clean up

Day 6

9:00-12:00     Install gear runners, floor boards

12:00-12:45    Lunch

12:45-4:00      Install deck stringers and foot braces

4:00-4:45       Group photos

4:45- 5:00      Clean up

Day 7

  9:00-10:00    Fair kayak frames

10:00-12:00    Begin to sew skin on kayaks

12:00-12:45    Lunch

12:45-4:45      Sew kayak skins

  4:45-5:00      Clean up

Day 8

9:00-11:00     Sew in cockpits

11:00-12:00    Shrink and dye (dye optional) skin

12:00-12:45    Lunch

12:45-4:45      Coat kayak on hull

4:45-5:00       Clean up

Day 9

9:00-12:00     Apply Coating on deck Clean up

Exact times of course vary depending on the class, but there was never a class that did not finish on time.

Tool List:

Eye protection and dust/vapor mask. First aid kit. Ear protection is provided.

All the required tools are provided by The Skin Boat School. Please feel free to bring your favorite edge tools, drills, and pull saws.
